As an adult, it can be hard to carve out time for creative play, such as coloring. That’s why I’ve changed my focus, thinking of coloring as a tool I use for a healthier, happier me. Here are just four ways I use coloring throughout my day,

1. Replace Screen Time.

When I’m tempted to pull out my phone “just because,” I pick up a pencil and color instead. I find this has helped me break the habit of reaching for my phone all the time, and leaves me feeling uplifted. Especially effective before bed, when I’m waiting, and as work breaks.

2. Integrated Me Time.

I’ve done many self-care practices that take me away from the bustle of my home in order for me relax and destress in solitude. While I think time alone is important, I wanted something that would help me release my tension while still being present for my family. With coloring, I can create a bubble of Zen, even in the midst of activity and conversation. In fact, I find that if I color while talking it helps me be a better listener as well. So I get to have family time and me time all in one.

3. Holds Space for Mindfulness.

I leave my coloring postcards and some pencils out in all the places I may need a reminder to pause, still my mind, and simply be. This can be a moment of gratitude, a prayer, a meditation, any mindfulness practice can easily be linked and strengthened through coloring. Plus, I find it is easier to set aside time for it when I’m still “doing something” (aka coloring). This helps me reduce and manage anxiety, stress, and worry, and reset my mental clarity.

4. Helps with Problem Solving.

Sometimes, I just need a moment to really think something through, and coloring helps me work past mental blocks and re-energize myself if a problem is making me feel stuck. I particularly use this to help with my writing and decision making – I pose a question to myself, then I color until the answer comes to me (or at least a new train of thinking).

Give them a try, and let me know what you think. I hope they help you on your journey in feeling great and making art a daily activity.
