New Year, New Camera, New Adventures.

This year I’m making a big effort to invest more time into my photography. So I’ve been looking to take photographs with my “fancy camera” every day. Ozy is a prime subject to capture and I’ve been practicing my action shots and photographer instructions, all the while experimenting to find different styles.

Ozy is constantly surprising me with his changes in colors and expressions. I’m attempting to capture all his moods and expressions, and while I do aim for the “perfect beauty shot” — so often the best is when I can simply capture Ozy being Ozy.

Right now, I’m working to have simple cues to help Ozy look specific directions. A slight cluck, much like I’d use for a horse, has been starting to work. My aim is so that I can both be in the photograph and directing Ozy, while making it look like I’m not giving him any cues.

Below are a few snapshot series to show a bit of Day in the Life from January 2024 for Ozy the Adventure Dog.

There is a lot to think about when photographing a dog in action. The lighting, exposure, shutter speed, aperture, composition, and most importantly — keeping the dog’s eyes in focus.

On top of that, is making sure the canine model is having fun, is safe and confident and getting plenty of rewards.

After going to the Shutterhound Dog Photographer Conference last fall, I’ve gained a whole new perspective on how to capture the personality and beauty that is any dog, in particular my Ozy.

This series shows Ozy’s intense focus. I had him sit and stay on a quiet part of a trail, already alerted to the treats he’d be getting. I’d already tested my camera settings then crouched low and said, “come to me.”

Each time I practice this, I notice I see a different look in Ozy’s eyes, which is so fun to see.

Original photographs captured with the Fujifilm X-T5 at Mt. Tabor Park and my home. In this collection I’m experimenting with different Fuji recipes to find a Black & White, a “Summer Sunshine,” and a Vibrant Day Portrait.
